SEHYUN ANSWER

Will sleepy-looking eyes
get bigger with double eyelid surgery?

Sehyun's answer is NO

Ptosis correction is surgery that reinforces the strength of the muscles that open the eyes.
When the upper eyelid covers much of the iris, simply having non-incisional or incisional
double eyelid surgery may lead to loss of the crease, or the change may be too small to be satisfying.
This is because the eyelid muscles that raise and lower the eyelid,
the levator muscle and Müller's muscle, are weak and loose.

This condition is called ptosis, and ptosis correction strengthens these two muscles
so that opening the eyes takes less effort and more of the iris is exposed,
creating clear, defined eyes.

Depending on the method, a double eyelid can be created at the same time as ptosis correction,
or if you do not want a double eyelid, we can plan to correct only how much of the iris is exposed
while keeping a monolid.

Big, clear eyes: the difference is how much of the iris shows!

Eyes with ptosis

Less than 80% of the iris is exposed,
giving a sleepy look.

Normal eyes

80–90% or more of the iris is exposed,
so the eyes look clear and defined.

DR. YOO TECHNIC

What Is Ptosis Correction?

When the muscles that open the eyes weaken, whether for congenital reasons or with age, less of the iris is exposed.
The eyes tend to look sleepy, and consciously trying to open them wider can cause forehead wrinkles.
If double eyelid surgery is done without correcting this, the change is small and the crease is more likely to disappear.

Ptosis correction is a delicate surgery.
Dr. Yoo Hyun-seok, with 20 years of experience as a physician, considers the appropriate iris exposure, the soft tissue and anatomy of the eye,
and the double eyelid shape you want, then plans and performs the right surgery, such as non-incisional or incisional ptosis correction.

Q&A

Q.What should I check when choosing a plastic surgery clinic in Gangnam for ptosis correction?
A.

Ptosis correction strengthens the muscle that opens the eye, so the first step is to diagnose whether you have ptosis, in which less than 80% of the iris is exposed. If ptosis is left untreated and only double eyelid surgery is done, the fold may come undone or the before-and-after change may be small. Check whether the surgeon explains, after the diagnosis, whether incisional or non-incisional ptosis correction suits you.

Sehyun Plastic Surgery (Sinsa-dong, Gangnam-gu, Seoul) is a single-doctor clinic led by Chief Surgeon Dr. Yoo Hyun-seok, a board-certified plastic surgeon who personally handles the consultation, the surgery and postoperative follow-up for ptosis correction. The surgery takes about 1 hour 30 minutes under brief sedation and local anesthesia, and stitches are removed after about 4–5 days.

Q.Won't double eyelid surgery alone make my eyes bigger?
A.

Double eyelid surgery alone forms the crease by attaching the eyelid skin to the fascia of the levator muscle, which increases the vertical height of the eye opening to some extent. However, it does not strengthen the loose levator and Müller's muscles, so the underlying muscle weakness that makes it difficult to open the eyes does not improve.
As a result, the eyes do not open as much vertically as with combined ptosis correction and double eyelid surgery, and the crease is also more likely to disappear because the muscles that open the eyes remain weak.

If you want to look less sleepy but do not want a double eyelid, ptosis can be corrected by skipping the step that attaches the levator muscle to the skin and only strengthening the muscle, or through the conjunctiva.

SEHYUN AESTHETIC CLINIC

Ptosis Correction Methods by Type

Incisional ptosis correction

For severe ptosis; can be combined with surgery to create your desired double eyelid crease

Non-incisional ptosis correction

No incision; suitable for those who want a subtle, partially hidden double eyelid crease, or can be combined with non-incisional double eyelid surgery

PROCEDURE

Incisional Ptosis Correction Procedure

  1. STEP 01

    Brief sedation + local anesthesia

  2. STEP 02

The eyelid skin is incised following the design planned in advance.
Excess fat, skin and other tissue can be removed at this stage.

  3. STEP 03

The loose levator muscle is tied to strengthen the muscle that opens the eye.

  4. STEP 04

Suturing is done delicately and without rushing to avoid leaving a scar.

PROCEDURE

Non-incisional Ptosis Correction Procedure

  1. STEP 01

    Brief sedation + local anesthesia

  2. STEP 02

Sutures are used to form knots in the muscle that lifts the eyelid.

  3. STEP 03

Working from inside the eyelid, we link several knots to shorten the muscle that lifts the eyelid and create a natural double eyelid crease.

  4. STEP 04

As more of the iris is exposed, the eyes look more defined and it becomes easier and more comfortable to open them.

Q&A

Q.I've heard that at some clinics it's hard to see the doctor after eye surgery. What happens after surgery here?
A.

At Sehyun, Dr. Yoo Hyun-seok checks your progress regularly after eye surgery.
Follow-up appointments are usually scheduled at 7 days / 1 month / 3 months / 6 months after surgery. Dr. Yoo takes time during consultations to listen carefully as you describe any discomfort, however minor.

Q.I live outside Seoul and left my questions in Online Consultation. Who will answer them?
A.

At our clinic, Chief Surgeon Dr. Yoo Hyun-seok personally reads every online consultation request and writes each reply.
Dr. Yoo also personally conducts every in-person consultation. Because consultations are not possible during surgery,
we can only offer consultations to patients who have booked in advance.

Q.Other clinics told me the first consultation is only with a consultation manager, not the doctor. What about Sehyun?
A.

At Sehyun, even your first consultation is a one-on-one session with Chief Surgeon Dr. Yoo Hyun-seok.
Dr. Yoo personally explains the initial assessment needed for surgery and the surgical plan, and helps you make your own decision.

Q.When is ptosis surgery considered?
A.

It is considered when the muscles that open the eyes are weak and the upper eyelid does not lift enough. We assess how much of the iris shows, muscle strength, and the condition of the eyelid skin and fat to determine whether correction is needed.

Q.What affects the cost of ptosis surgery and ptosis correction?
A.

Depending on the degree of ptosis and the structure of the eyelid, we choose an incisional or non-incisional method and decide whether to combine it with double eyelid surgery, so the cost also varies. We let you know the cost after an assessment and consultation to determine your surgical plan, and you can inquire on the Cost Consultation page of the Consultation & Booking menu.

Q.Where can I see ptosis correction and ptosis surgery reviews?
A.

The Real Surgery Reviews list is available on the Eye Surgery page of the Before & After menu. Full reviews and photos are available after member login.

When reading reviews, it is a good idea to check whether an incision was made and whether double eyelid surgery was done at the same time. Because the method and results vary with each person's eyelid skin and muscle condition, we determine the correction you need based on an assessment.
