SEHYUN ANSWER
After canthoplasty,
can the eye corners close up again over time
and scars remain visible?
Sehyun's answer is NO
When an experienced surgeon plans properly and operates with care,
the eye corners do not close up again and no visible signs of surgery remain.
Epicanthoplasty corrects the epicanthal fold that covers the inner corner of the eye.
Canthoplasty has a high revision rate, and recurrence and scarring are what patients worry about most.
Recurrence can happen if the tissue in the treated area is not properly removed, repositioned and sutured.
As part of the body's natural healing process,
the skin may return to its preoperative state, causing the opening to close up again.
With tissue repositioning and complete suturing, Sehyun's canthoplasty aims for satisfactory results
without the opening closing up again.
DR. YOO'S THINK
In Dr. Yoo Hyun-seok's epicanthoplasty, the incision line is placed close to the lashes, so the scar becomes hard to notice 2–3 months after surgery.
DR. YOO TECHNIC
The epicanthal fold, common in East Asians, is skin tissue covering the inner corner of the eye (medial canthus);
it can make the eyes look less open and farther apart.
Magic Epicanthoplasty gives the eyes a more open, softer appearance in proportion to your face.

SEHYUN SPECIAL POINTS
01
The incision line is placed close to the lashes.
It is slightly red after surgery, but after 2–3 months
the scar is hard to notice even up close.
02
This method relieves the tension on the epicanthal fold
and repositions the surrounding skin with minimal skin removal, so there is no tension on the suture line and no resulting widening or depression of the scar.
03
Sehyun's epicanthoplasty method makes it easy to adjust how much the inner corner is opened,
creating a shape that is soft and natural rather than angular.
SIDE EFFECTS
Possible side effects of epicanthoplasty include scarring and redness that lasts a long time, the opened area reattaching, and an unnatural-looking inner corner of the eye caused by overly extensive incisions.
Most of these occur when the design, the extent of the incision, and the tissue repositioning and suturing do not suit the individual's eye shape and skin, so the preoperative assessment looks at both the extent of the epicanthal fold and the proportions of the face. Whether side effects occur, and how severe they are, varies from person to person.
The skin at the inner corner of the eye is thin, so even small scars can be noticeable. If the design does not suit you or the incision is excessive, the scar may remain clearly visible or the redness may last a long time.
As the opened area heals, the skin can return to its preoperative state and look reattached. This happens when tissue repositioning and suturing are insufficient.
If too much skin is removed, much of the pink tissue at the inner corner of the eye may show, or the inner corner may look sharp, creating an unnatural appearance. This is why the distance between the eyes and the width of each eye are considered when deciding how far to open the inner corners.
If tension remains at the suture line, the scar may widen or become depressed over time, and with a design that does not take facial proportions into account, the tear troughs may also look more prominent.
Reconstructive surgery after epicanthoplasty reduces scarring by repositioning or reinforcing the surrounding tissue. If needed, scar tissue is removed and the incision line is redesigned. Because the tissue is already weakened, revision surgery requires careful suturing and care during recovery. Laser treatment or scar ointment may also be used to reduce redness.
PROCEDURE
STEP 01
Local anesthesia
STEP 02
A minimal incision is made in the skin of the epicanthal fold, and the surrounding skin is repositioned to create a soft, natural shape
STEP 03
The incision line close to the lashes is carefully sutured.
STEP 04
Redness at the surgical site fades after about 2–3 months, leaving the eyes looking open and natural.
Q&A
At Sehyun, Dr. Yoo Hyun-seok checks your progress regularly after eye surgery.
Follow-up appointments are usually scheduled at 7 days / 1 month / 3 months / 6 months after surgery. Dr. Yoo takes time during consultations to listen carefully as you describe any discomfort, however minor.
At our clinic, Chief Surgeon Dr. Yoo Hyun-seok personally reads every online consultation request and writes each reply.
Dr. Yoo also personally conducts every in-person consultation. Because consultations are not possible during surgery,
we can only offer consultations to patients who have booked in advance.
At Sehyun, even your first consultation is a one-on-one session with Chief Surgeon Dr. Yoo Hyun-seok.
Dr. Yoo personally explains the initial assessment needed for surgery and the surgical plan, and helps you make your own decision.
After epicanthoplasty, a red line or scar may remain at the incision site, and how visible it is and how quickly it heals vary from person to person. At Sehyun, we incise only as much of the epicanthal fold skin as needed, reposition the surrounding skin, and then carefully suture the incision line placed close to the lashes. We explain how to care for it according to your skin type and recovery during consultation and follow-up visits.
Go to the Eye Surgery page in the Before & After menu to see the Real Surgery Reviews list with reviews left by actual patients. Full reviews and photos are available after member login.
Because the extent of the incision and the design differ with the prominence of the epicanthal fold and skin condition, it is a good idea to look at each patient's eyes before surgery and the extent of correction when reading reviews. Surgical results vary from person to person.
The extent of the incision and the skin repositioning plan differ with the prominence of the epicanthal fold and the condition of the skin at the inner corner of the eye. We let you know the cost of epicanthoplasty after the method and scope are decided through diagnosis and consultation, and you can inquire on the Cost Consultation page of the Consultation & Booking menu.
