SEHYUN ANSWER

Alar reduction leaves scars,
so is the non-incisional method always best?

Sehyun's answer is NO

With Dr. Yoo Hyun-seok's expertise in choosing the position and size of the incision,
we plan alar reduction that leaves no visible signs of surgery.

Because alar reduction can leave external scars,
some people mistakenly believe that a non-incisional method, which ties the nostril wings with sutures, is always better.

But an incisional method does not necessarily leave a lot of scarring.
With 20 years of experience as a physician, Dr. Yoo Hyun-seok draws on expertise in choosing the position and size of the incision
to plan natural results in which the scar
is barely distinguishable even up close.

Customized Alar Reduction at Sehyun

Alar reduction requires consideration of multiple factors.

In Sehyun's customized alar reduction, the surgical plan considers the size and shape of the nostrils and the width and height of the nostril wings
all together, for a more natural and satisfying result.

SEHYUN SPECIAL POINTS

Dr. Yoo Hyun-seok's Conditions for Successful Alar Reduction

01

Inconspicuous scars

Without expertise in choosing the position and size of the incision, surgery will inevitably leave noticeable scars.

Dr. Yoo Hyun-seok plans the position and size of the incision based on the overall shape of the nose, how wide the nostril wings flare and skin thickness, then sutures delicately and without rushing so no visible signs of surgery remain.

02

Appropriate nostril size

If the nostrils are already an appropriate size, only the skin outside the nostrils should be removed so that the nostrils do not become smaller.

Once nostrils are made smaller, it is difficult to enlarge them again, so removing too much skin simply to narrow the nostril wings
can lead to an unsatisfying result.

03

Natural nostril shape

For a natural result, the nostrils must be reduced while preserving their natural curve as much as possible.

If this is not considered during surgery, the nostrils may become partly distorted or asymmetrical, or the nostril wings may become flattened,
making the result look unnatural and the surgery noticeable.

Alar Reduction Methods

CASE 1

Thick nostril wings: reducing the skin

Excess skin and subcutaneous tissue are removed from flared nostril wings
to reduce their width.

This method can also correct large nostrils at the same time,
and the incision inside the nostril is delicately sutured in two layers
so almost no scar shows on the outside.

CASE 2

Wide lower nostril wings: gathering with sutures

When only the lower part of the nostrils is wide, the bottom of both nostrils
is tied and drawn toward the center with the medical sutures used in thread lifts.

No external scar remains, and the surgery is short, about 15 minutes.

SEHYUN AESTHETIC CLINIC

Sehyun's surgical results are backed by
Dr. Yoo Hyun-seok's 20+ years of experience as a physician.

Performing rhinoplasty for 20 years or more means treating a truly wide range of cases.
One patient came to us for a 7th revision after other clinics said surgery would be difficult,
and others came to us with recurring problems after a clinic had used rib cartilage for what was only their 2nd revision.

I don't believe any case is impossible.
Some cases, however, need more research and careful thought.
For stable, consistent results, Sehyun keeps researching and studying every day, and performs each surgery carefully based on a plan.

Q&A

Q.Where can I see alar reduction reviews?
A.

You can find actual reviews in the Real Surgery Reviews list for Rhinoplasty under the Before & After menu. Log in to your member account to view full reviews and photos.

When reading reviews, it is a good idea to look not only at the width of the nostril wings but also at the size, curve and symmetry of the nostrils. The method you need can differ depending on your skin thickness and the shape of your nostril wings.

Q.How do alar reduction scars heal?
A.

The incision may look red at first and often fades over time. Because scarring and healing speed vary from person to person, the incision position and extent of removal must be decided carefully. During recovery, it is best to avoid touching or pressing your nose firmly.

Q.What affects the cost of alar reduction?
A.

The cost can vary depending on whether the procedure reduces skin and subcutaneous tissue or draws the lower parts of the nostrils together with sutures, as well as the extent of correction. After assessing the thickness and flare of your nostril wings and the size of your nostrils during consultation, we provide the cost based on your surgical plan. You can inquire on the Cost Consultation page of the Consultation & Booking menu.

Q.How is the alar reduction method chosen?
A.

For thick nostril wings, we consider reducing excess skin and subcutaneous tissue. When the lower parts of the nostrils are wide, we consider drawing their bases together with medical sutures.

The method is chosen by looking at the size and shape of the nostrils and the width and height of the nostril wings together. Once nostrils are made smaller they are hard to widen again, so the extent of removal is planned carefully.
