What Is Lower Blepharoplasty?

Lower blepharoplasty is surgery that removes loose skin and wrinkles under the eyes while also removing puffy under-eye fat.

With age, the skin and muscle under the eyes that hold the fat gradually lose elasticity,
and the fat pads held by the muscle sag as well, making the under-eye area bulge.
There is more than one way to perform lower blepharoplasty. The method that suits you is chosen based on the degree of under-eye sagging, the amount of fat and muscle elasticity.

PROCEDURE

Lower Blepharoplasty Methods by Type

  1. STEP 01

When the under-eye fat pads are puffy and the skin sags a lot

After a small incision is made near the lower lashes, the loose skin, muscle and membrane surrounding the fat are separated, with dissection extending below the orbital bone.

Excess fat is removed, the remaining fat and the membrane surrounding it are repositioned, and the tissue is lifted upward from the cheekbone below the orbital bone.

After the tissue is lifted, the remaining loose skin and muscle are removed.
The slack muscle is pulled toward the lateral canthus and secured to effectively eliminate even deep under-eye wrinkles.

Dark circles and tear troughs are improved for a brighter, younger-looking eye area.

  2. STEP 02

When under-eye sagging is not severe

Only the loose skin is dissected and removed, without damaging the muscle around the eye.
If the under-eye area is puffy due to fat, the fat is removed or repositioned through the conjunctiva.
To prevent sagging from recurring, the muscle beneath the removed skin is pulled toward the outer corner of the eye and secured, further improving under-eye wrinkles.

Because no unnecessary dissection is done, wounds heal quickly and complications such as hematoma can be avoided.

Q&A

Q.What should I check when choosing a plastic surgery clinic for lower blepharoplasty?
A.

Lower blepharoplasty addresses sagging skin, wrinkles and bulging fat under the eyes together, so it matters whether the method is chosen to match your skin laxity, fat pads and muscle condition. Check whether the surgeon explains before surgery whether the fat will only be removed or repositioned, and where the incision will be made.

At Sehyun Plastic Surgery, Chief Surgeon Dr. Yoo Hyun-seok, a board-certified plastic surgeon, personally handles the consultation, the surgery and follow-up for lower blepharoplasty. A fine incision is made along the lower lash line to correct the skin, fat and muscle together. The surgery takes about 1 hour 30 minutes, stitches are removed after about 4–5 days, and daily activities can be resumed after 2–4 days (recovery varies from person to person).

Q.Are there side effects after lower blepharoplasty?
A.

If too much skin is removed, the lower eyelid can turn outward.
That is why an experienced surgeon must plan precisely how far to lift the loose skin,
then lift it and remove the appropriate amount so that a natural-looking result can be expected.

Q&A

Q.I live outside Seoul and left my questions in Online Consultation. Who will answer them?
A.

At our clinic, Chief Surgeon Dr. Yoo Hyun-seok personally reads every online consultation request and writes each reply.
Dr. Yoo also personally conducts every in-person consultation. Because consultations are not possible during surgery,
we can only offer consultations to patients who have booked in advance.

Q.Other clinics told me the first consultation is only with a consultation manager, not the doctor. What about Sehyun?
A.

At Sehyun, even your first consultation is a one-on-one session with Chief Surgeon Dr. Yoo Hyun-seok.
Dr. Yoo personally explains the initial assessment needed for surgery and the surgical plan, and helps you make your own decision.

Q.What affects the cost of lower blepharoplasty?
A.

The cost of lower blepharoplasty depends on the scope of surgery needed, such as skin removal, fat removal or repositioning, and muscle correction. We let you know the method and cost after assessing under-eye sagging, the amount of fat and muscle elasticity in consultation. You can inquire on the Cost Consultation page of the Consultation & Booking menu.

Q.Where can I see lower blepharoplasty reviews?
A.

Reviews left by actual patients are in the Real Surgery Reviews list in the Before & After menu. Full reviews and photos are available after member login. Rather than looking only at photos taken right after surgery, it is a good idea to also see how the contours under the eyes settle over time.

Q.How long is recovery after lower blepharoplasty?
A.

According to the surgery information, you can return to daily activities 2–4 days after surgery, and stitches are removed after about 4–5 days. Recovery time varies from person to person depending on skin condition and the scope of surgery.

Even when visible swelling goes down, the internal tissue may still be healing. During recovery, avoid rubbing your eyes hard or bending your head down, and start wearing eye makeup as advised by your doctor.
